How it spreads
Contaminated water or soil contacting broken skin or mucous membranes, often after flooding.
Symptoms and context
Fever, headache, muscle pain and red eyes; severe illness can affect kidneys, liver or lungs.
Prevention
Avoid contaminated floodwater, cover cuts and use waterproof protective clothing where exposure is unavoidable.
When to seek advice
Seek prompt care for fever after floodwater or animal exposure; jaundice or breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment.
